LS.Topaz is botanical facial skincare formulated and made by Carol McEwin in the professional lab inside Lilly Sage Apothecary in Roswell, Georgia. Inspired by the many facets of a gemstone, we believe skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all, so each product has one clear job and is built around ingredients chosen because they work.

I was a hippy. Now, I’m a hippy with an espresso machine.
I grew up mostly in Tennessee and went to art school, where I focused on pottery. Between pots, I took an aptitude test, and the results surprised me: this artist scored best in math and mechanical aptitude, and the test suggested a career as a chemist. It would be years before I appreciated how right that was.
As a young woman I went to Alaska and lived in the bush. I made soap, sourdough bread and my own butter, raised chickens, canned vegetables and became a woodworker. In Alaska, sustainability is a way of life, and it stayed with me.
In time I wanted to be southern again, so I came to Georgia. In 2017 I opened a little soap and body care shop, Lilly Sage Apothecary. That chemistry aptitude came in handy when I trained in formulating botanical cosmetics. I completed the full Formula Botanica program, and I keep learning as a member of the Formula Botanica Lab, their ongoing professional training platform.
I tested my facial formulas and sold them from the shop first. In September 2021, LS.Topaz formally launched. These days I make soap, skincare… and espresso.
Made by hand in Roswell
Every LS.Topaz product is currently made in small batches in the professional lab inside Lilly Sage Apothecary at 1097 Alpharetta Street in Roswell. It’s the same lab where Lilly Sage products are made, in true apothecary style. There’s no outside factory and no mass production: Carol formulates and makes every product herself.
What’s in, what’s not
Botanical extracts and oils, with organic ingredients used whenever they are available
Proven skin-care workhorses such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, bakuchiol and ceramides
Never tested on animals. LS.Topaz is cruelty-free.
No retinol. Our Bakuchiol + Mastic Tears Serum uses bakuchiol, a plant-based retinol replacement.
One product, one job
We pair nature with cutting-edge science, and we don’t pile every trending ingredient into one bottle.
Facial Mist: refresh and tone with aloe, rose, white tea, witch hazel and gotu kola.
Hyaluronic Acid Serum: holds water for plumper-looking skin.
Niacinamide Serum: pores, tone, oil and brightness, with moth bean.
Bakuchiol + Mastic Tears Serum: gentle renewal and firmness, with no retinol.
Botanical Facial Moisturizer: seals it in with ceramides, oils and moth bean.
Revitalizing Eye Gel: caffeine, niacinamide and pea extract for the eye area.
What studies have found about these ingredients (these are not tests of our products): 0.5% bakuchiol reduced the look of wrinkles and dark spots about as well as 0.5% retinol over 12 weeks, with less flaking and stinging (Dhaliwal et al., Br J Dermatol 2019). 5% niacinamide reduced the look of fine lines and dark spots over 12 weeks (Bissett et al., Dermatol Surg 2005). Creams with 0.1% hyaluronic acid improved hydration and elasticity around the eyes over 60 days (Pavicic et al., J Drugs Dermatol 2011).
